The Future
Hessle High School has been officially designated a specialist Science College with effect from 1 September 2003. Specialist status will bestow many benefits on the school including a substantial increase in funding over the next 4 years.
There will be an
initial capital fund of £150,000 and an annual grant of about £175,000,
guaranteed for at least 4 years (a total of nearly £850,000).
Chair of Governors Ron Lithgow was delighted at the news.
“We are
already a very successful school and this will take us to an even higher level,” he commented.
Headteacher David Rose was equally pleased when the Department for Education and
Skills informed him of the school’s success.
“2003 has been an excellent year for the school. We have received an outstanding Ofsted report, won the Artsmark Award and now achieved specialist status. As a Science College we will focus on exciting developments in Science and Maths which will both benefit our students and the community and provide an impetus for continuing
improvement in all areas of the school.
Within our development programme we envisage a whole range of improvements,
initiatives and projects that will benefit everyone. We particularly want to involve
more parents in the teaching and learning experience and many initiatives will be designed to benefit the community.”
There are many exciting plans for development in many areas of the school. By September 2004 there will be two new Science labs and three labs will be completely refurbished. The Maths department will also benefit with substantial investment in IT equipment.
The school’s Science College Co-ordinator Chris Peters now has the responsibility of
implementing the plans for the new Science College.
He is determined to develop the potential of the school as a centre of excellence for
Science, Maths and ICT.
A particular focus of the new plans is to develop an environmentally aware ethos in the school, including a new Environmental Science course for all students.
Chris Peters explains: “The school will act as a focus and inspiration for good citizenship in the local area as we work with our partners in business and education to pursue and make real our vision of an environmentally aware community.”
