Reading and the Library

Our library sits at the heart of our school, which highlights the value we place on reading.

Designed with our students in mind, we have created a welcoming and comfortable space for our students to sit, read and discuss their favourite books. 

Students are welcome to visit our library to read, complete homework and participate in our Book Club. The library is open during lunchtimes and after school (operating on a library pass system) so that all students have access to our wide range of resources. 

The Hessle Canon

The Hessle Canon is a list of 100 books we would like our students to read before they leave The Hessle Academy. The Canon includes books we have hand-picked and some that will be read in English lessons, ensuring everyone has chance to make progress through it. There are also a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts, texts from different genres, and from different time periods; there is something for everyone!

We have ten copies of each book, ensuring that as many of our students can access Canon books at once. Every time a student reads one of the canon books, they will get their reading journal stamped and will gain house points and rewards.
